Chocolate evokes mixed emotions in women who love it, research shows

Suitors might be wise to forego chocolate for their sweethearts – for Valentine’s Day or any time – especially if the recipients are women. The sweets conjure up too many mixed emotions, suggests a professor at Texas A&M University whose research centers on drug and food cravings.

In scientific research on the physiological and biological basis of food cravings, Texas A&M psychology professor Antonio Cepeda-Benito has found that chocolate can trigger a conflicted reaction.

In women who identified themselves as “high cravers,” the sweets can generate positive feelings such as security and satisfaction, while simultaneously triggering negative reactions such as depression and anxiety.
