Welcome to research at Texas A&M University. This is our eighth edition of Advance. This magazine will illustrate how much research, an integral part of our university and its mission, is growing, changing and shaping the lives of people all over the world.

Research at Texas A&M spans every continent in the world. Our junior researchers are some of the most promising at any university, and our senior researchers are some of the most highly acclaimed and experienced in the world. Research and the intellectual investigation that it brings to our classrooms and students is an invaluable part of education.  Students at Texas A&M have the opportunity to learn from leaders in their fields — the people who structure, identify and develop solutions to problems that face our world.

In October we will co-sponsor the 2007 George Bush China-U.S. Relations Conference in Washington, D.C. The first one in 2003 brought the largest delegation of Chinese officials to the United States – ever. In 2005 we co-sponsored the second conference in Beijing and it was a tremendous success. The 2007 conference, as with previous conferences, will include research roundtables where Texas A&M researchers and Chinese researchers will identify areas of common concern for future collaborative research.

Several new research facilities on campus are in varies stages of construction. The Interdisciplinary Life Sciences Building, the first true interdisciplinary building on campus, is slated to open in fall 2008. The progress of this building can be seen at http://ilsb.tamu.edu. The Texas Institute for Genomic Medicine is under construction and will pioneer the development of life-changing medical breakthroughs, accelerate the pace of medical discoveries and foster the development of the biotechnology industry in Texas. Also, we will soon break ground on the Texas Institute for Preclinical Studies a unique facility that will facilitate translational research and assist in commercialization of our intellectual property, forge relationships with small businesses in Texas that will further our research and academic mission and educate students regarding regulatory issues and device and drug testing.

So as you can see, research at Texas A&M is growing and changing rapidly. In addition to the changes in research, Texas A&M is refining its image graphically to provide a more consistent image of the university to the public. Our redesigned cover is part of this effort. We hope you are pleased with the results.

Thank you for sharing your time with us, and I am happy to share our research with you each year.

Sincerely,

 Ewing-sig
